The Mayan Theatre

The Mayan Theatre of Los Angeles, California has a long history. It was built in 1927 by architect Stiles Clements. The design was by Mexican artist Francisco Cornejo. The idea was to create a modern theater based on Mayan Culture. It is considered a Mayan Revival Theater. The first performance on the stage was Oh Kay, a George Gershwin production. The theater was one of eight buildings in a pre Columbian style. It has hand carved painted walls including a Sun Calendar and amazing chandelier.

In 1990 the theater reopened after a long closure. It was renovated to bring its original glory back to the residents and visitors of Los Angeles. It is an amazing building mixed in with modern concrete lofts found in the area. The hardwood stage was refinished during the renovation including the dance floor. They also added in new lighting and top of the line sound equipment. Throughout the year there are a variety of performances including Salsa bands, dance competitions and special events. Some of the special events to be held at the Mayan include Frightened Rabbit, MIA, and Lucha Va Voom. Doors usually open about 7 or 8pm depending on the performance.
