City: Fort Eustis, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (757) 878-1115
Address: 300 Washington Blvd.

Description: They say an army marches on its stomach. Well, here you’ll see how an army rides. From mule trains and Conestoga wagons to the latest armored personnel carriers, it’s all here. The museum occupies a 50,000-square-foot building on the base as well as four outdoor parks. See how the Army standardized truck production and learn about Operation Mulberry, which created a pair of artificial harbors to support the invasion of Normandy in World War II. There are dioramas, including one with a Vietnam era gun truck, “Eve of Destruction.” You can see the helicopters that ferried soldiers across that country and bikes that the Viet Cong used for transport. There are amphibious craft of all sizes, from the DUKW landing trucks to barges. The museum is free but on a military base, so have ID and vehicle owner’s info. It’s closed on Mon and federal holidays.
