For better or worse, the university is making changes:

•A new $2.1 million athletic facility is under construction and slated for completion in 2014.
•The school now plans to build its first new dorm since 1969.
•First-year enrollment is up more than 7 percent for fall 2013, and officials expect to receive even more applications next year than this year.
W.Va. State chief looks back after taking over troubled school* - Education - Charleston Daily Mail - West Virginia News and Sports -

I'm sooo glad to see this school finally improving! Any school that bares the state's name, just like WVU, should represent it well.

Surely the new basketball arena isn't getting built for 2.1M is it? The drawings of the new gym I saw were for a nice upgrade over what they had before at old Fleming Hall.
Can anyone confirm this?

According to the General Contractor, PJ Dick, the project is $17.3 mil. I think the $2.1 mil figure was from a recent anonymous donation, from which $1 mil went to the Fleming Hall renovation.

Being a former State student I am certainly proud of the improvements there. What I'd really like to see is someone take the football program seriously there. They are going to build a new weight room/locker room there, but they really need new seating, concessions, restrooms, press pox, and maybe even turf. Literally every high school in Kanawha County has better facilities than WV State.

I certainly agree with that.

Just a random thought...is there a cross-town rivalry between WVSU and UC? If not then there really should be.

Most certainly there is! In all sports, and it can be heated sometimes. Basketball is the big game between both schools.

Well that's good. WVSU definitely needs a football stadium to compete with UC's Laidley Field.

That's the truth, but of course UC didn't always have Laidley Field. In fact they haven't had football that long.

Yeah I remember that. When I started high school, it was Capital HS's field still.
