In my 15 years of experience of going to Myrtle Beach area, this is totally not the case. In fact it is much the opposite:
Most of Myrtle Beach is geared toward family vacations and retired people. There is little trouble, fights, drunken people, etc. Most of the familes have kids in that 5 to 15 age group, so it's geared toward family type entertainment. The police in the area will not tolerate trouble makers it seems. The locals are friendly and calm. The condo' and homes are all new, and the area seems upscale outside of the old part of Myrtle Beach. North Myrtle Beach is the nicest part, but much of the area is newer. Also, unlike places like California where there is people all in a rush, crushing traffic, and a uptight vibe, Myrtle Beach moves like a lizard sunning itself on a sand dune, lol. The ocean is warm and the sand is white. Charleston is a nice day trip if your rent a condo in MB as well. We really enjoy heading down in the shoulder seasons (March - May), and Nov.
We rented this condo for a great price ($119 per night in November) two years ago.
I would say you can't go wrong for a 5 day vacation in Myrtle Beach. Living there I have no experience with.
