Hey all,

Just moved to Tyler from San Antonio.

Seems like a hopping town, here.

Default Welcome!

Yeah, it is "somewhat hopping", for a place our size.

If there is anything I might help you with, contact me directly. If I don't know what you need, maybe I can refer you. You can see I've been on C.D. for well over a decade. Yes, I know, I know, I really DON'T have a life, lol.

I'm still considering moving to Tyler in the future. How's the cost of living and situation there for retired people? Obviously I'm not looking for nightlife or such, but just a nice peaceful place to live.

Currently in Texarkana, if that tells you anything.

Coming from Texarkana to Tyler, you will think you've died and gone to heaven - LOL. Come on down!

To me, Texas isn't a terrific option for retirement but it's not terrible either - it's sort of middle of the road from what I can tell. It depends on your individual retirement situation. But to me, Texas is a state you come to when you're young (if you're not born here) and it's a great place to build a business, make money, etc. Not as great when you're retired because the lack of a state income tax is so offset by property taxes. Oh well.

Tyler is a really good town overall though in my opinion. It's actually a small city. It's about 80 percent white collar and about 20 percent blue collar. It's near Dallas but not in DFW traffic. It's got scenic areas around it, and the outskirts seem very bucolic to me - lots of rolling green hills, lakes and rivers, and trees, both pine and hardwood. Traffic is not terrible at any time, though Tyler can get congested around 5 pm and 8 am.

There are lots of shopping and eating out opportunities here but not a lot of clubs and that sort of thing. There are decent places to take kids. Tyler is good in this order: Families, older folks, retirees. There are excellent medical facilities here, for instance.

Tyler is a quiet, sort of laid back, pleasant place for the most part. That's been my 25 or so years of experience here.

Thank you so much, Kathryn. That's the kind of thing I was looking to find out. I need to stay here in this state, need the warmer climate now as I'm older, and NOT really happy at all here in TK. And I'm not looking to pack up and move again another 900+ miles or so toward Arizona and sure the hell not Florida.
