Victoria, B.C. has just been named the best city in the world in prestigious Conde Nast's Readers' Choice Awards for top cities of 2023. Victoria is one of only two North American locations to make the list.
When I was working, my company transferred me there for 18 months. The small town mentality and insular thinking is toxic. I'm a skyscraper-loving urbanite, accustomed to a populous metropolitan region with multicultural neighborhoods and an endless string of things to do.
Conde Nast Traveller, a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, said Victoria captured top marks in its annual Readers' Choice Awards of top cities for 2023.
You have to be of the very specific demographic to even hear of, far less yo read that magazine, and even more specific to participate in the award's survey.
I never had a bad visit to Victoria. Charming, historic, clean, friendly people. I would get away from the tourist areas and go for walks in suburban neighborhoods off the beaten track. All the people would say hello to me on my walks.
That was years ago and may not be true in 2023, but people were very cordial then, and it wasn't that long ago.
Victoria is one of those places I can see myself moving to every time I visit. I wouldn't move there, but it underscores the extreme appeal. Such a nice place. I just love the harbor.
I was only in Victoria for a short visit but I'd have to say Victoria has got to have the most active little Chinatown in North America. The Chinatown is only 2-3 blocks big, so much smaller than Vancouver's (which sadly is shrinking) but it feels lively and has good authentic restaurants and grocers. It does look and feel authentically Chinese to me, not like made-for-tourist Chinatowns elsewhere.
