“Charles County boasts some of Maryland’s highest incomes, and its Black population is soaring. The typical household in Charles — a former tobacco-growing county that stretches south from Prince George’s to the broad tidal Potomac — pulls in $104,000 a year, easily outstripping the median income of $86,000 in Prince George’s and the national median of $65,000. And many indicators suggest that Charles became majority-Black during the pandemic, if not earlier.”

“The number of Black households earning $200,000 or more a year in Charles County quadrupled between 2009 and 2020, according to a Washington Post analysis of ACS data. It was by far the fastest-growing group of Black earners in the county over that time. As with Prince George’s, county incomes in Charles rose as the Black population expanded.”

“Where is the new epicenter of the area’s substantial Black middle class? In a word: Waldorf. The forested commuter haven has grown faster than anywhere else in Maryland over the past 30 years. In 1990, about 15,000 people lived there, 82 percent of them White. By 2020, more than 81,000 people lived there, 64 percent of them Black.”

LOL, nope , numbers are way off! Lived in Waldorf since 1980 , even then it had almost 25,000 people. Make no mistake PG County is the biggest and wealthiest majority African American community. I laugh when you try to to push "Charles County" it's not Charles County that is Black but Waldorf which is about 60/65% ,make no mistake the rest of Charles County is still mostly White. The fact you try to say it happen during the pandemic is comical Charles County (Waldorf) has been a majority Black community for close to 20 years.

I’m just the messenger and literally just quoted the article word for word. In any case, what you said about Waldorf being black majority doesn’t contradict what I quoted. Waldorf seems to be the most populace area of Charles county, hence has the most impact on the county’s demographics.

So Charles County is majority black now? Last I heard it was about 50/50 with a small but noticeable Asian population.

It is 48.5% Black now as of 2020, versus ~34% White. The county is whiter the further south you go (i.e. La Plata and south on 301) but Waldorf is basically South Fort Washington or Lower Marlboro .

And not sure what you mean by Asian population. They are basically all in Howard, MoCo, or Fairfax Co. Even AACo doesn't exactly have a noticeable Asian population. This is not PG County with College Park being an enclave...

This lines up with what Ive seen. 48.5% black in 2020 (with the 3% black undercount) and now it's 6 months into 2022? It's very likely majority-black now.

And hence the article is wrong.

Fort Wahington and Oxon Hill have always had a really huge Filipino population (although its never mention in the media) and some have migrated into Charles Co. Charles Co. also has Indian doctors and professionals. Several of their children have been school valedictorians. LaPlata has had a mosque for at least 20 years or more, its a plain, nondescript building
