I could get into one of my favorite neighborhoods in one of my favorite cities for that price:

These threads tend to get dominated by the cherry picked listings that are probably out of the norm for that "zomg look at how much or how little $XYZ gets you in my area" effect.

Here are what I would say is "most typical" for what you'd see in that price range in Raleigh some of the various areas/lifestyles.

Typical Downtown Condo:
Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Typical "Inside the Beltline" Bungalow (needs some updating; a "magazine-worthy" updated version of this house would easily be in the $600k range; it's only going to be fixer-uppers in this price range in that area): Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Typical "midtown" 70s ranch in similar "update status" as the ITB house linked above: Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Typical 90's larger suburban home in N. Raleigh assigned to "top rated" schools that has been nicely updated:Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Typical newer-build in fast-growing yet not-as-trendy East Raleigh:Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

That's a charming house. It would be more than twice that price in Raleigh.

True for the most part but no cherry picking from me. My first post was for a pretty desirable suburb in Houston, though the schools aren't great. Go a couple miles down and they're fabulous.

Schools are middle of the road, but remodeled 3300 square feet in Sugarland, a nice suburb in Houston. Impressed.

$400,000 won't buy as much as it used to in Stillwater, OK:

Just 2281 sq. ft. here for new build in higher income side of town. This house could be build for under $200,000 15-20 years ago:
