Though Chicago gets the DA WINTERS. Always loved the well-built housing. Mostly solid brick, front lawns as is the city street-grid and alley in back. Powerline poles there not fronts to blemish.

My neck of the woods Northwest side of the city great neighborhoods no risk of gentrification far from the core.
Always nice neighborhoods. Some streets could use repaving..

Chicago 1950s 60s home. Called a Step-Up Ranch. 1-story. I see it as a Bungalow-Ranch or 50s bungalow to me LOL.
Built 1959. Brick built of course. Corner lot. Well-built full plaster walls. Not just a stick-home quick-build today.
Full Basement finished like another floor for a den. Basic size kitchen and kitchenette as once called.
Nice full original wood oak floors, 2.5 car detached brick garage facing alley.and back year to put a patio or even larger deck and garden.
Tree-lined street with front lawn and its own tree. DELUXE BRICK FENCE along the side street

How bout a Georgian.

Chicago Georgian. Lovely interior photos and fireplaces.
Built 1953 Brick of course. NO NEW SUNBELT SUBDIVISION stick-home with lovely HOA and no basement.

Full Basement FINISHED w/fireplace and the smaller windows with still plenty of light.
Pictures look tiled floor or awesome original wood-floors. Love the newer Platinum Oak color cabinets that mimic probably the color of the original which began in the mid-50s as common 1950s color woodwork.
Home looks fully rehabbed in earthtones I love. Full use of 2nd floor unlike a traditional bungalow
by the tapered roof as its neighbors is one. Two lovely white birch trees in front and front lawn.
2-car detached garage and plain good size yard for Chicago in back like a blank slate w/fruit trees.
Alley to its side and back as it is a corner but to a side alley with privacy fence.
Near Metro suburban train to downtown and Chicago L.

2000 sq/ft home probably not counting the finished basement? Basement is 1,100 sq/ft w/700 sq/ft finished.
* For SALE PRICE - $399.999 on market 5 months and $15,000 price cut.
3-bad 1.5 bath...TAXES 2020 $5,818.
*** Last sold in 2005 for $325,000 PRE-CRASH Baby. ***

It’s why I love the midwest.
Still seems overpriced like everywhere else though.
Beautiful homes in good neighborhoods!

BTW why stop at a ranch size house, when you can get a bigger home like this? (confession: I never cared for ranch houses very much, sorry to its fans)

https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/54.../home/13498399

This is 5 beds, 2 baths, and is at $320K.

Another one:

https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/63.../home/13508351

This is 4 beds, 3 baths, at $349K.

Here's another nice house, on the southwest side:

https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/63.../home/13992547

This is $349.9K, and is 5 bedrooms and 3 baths. And to be honest, the inside of this house might be my favorite, out of these 3 example houses.

The city services and school system are good. Three old elementary schools have been rebuilt since 2015.

In my town, $400k gets you a 1,000 square foot single family home on a small lot with some issues.

Here’s a recent transaction. $386k. Flood zone. Lots of road noise on a high traffic street. If the location doesn’t have issues, it will have vintage kitchen & bath.

https://www.redfin.com/MA/Dartmouth/...gn=share_sheet

In the failed city a couple miles away, $400k will buy a 3 bedroom single family home in a middle class neighborhood.
